Atlanta Police Department Reaching Youth Through Writing
“Because Every Kid Needs a Hero” Essay Contest
The Atlanta Police Department in partnership with The Atlanta Police Foundation and the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation proudly announces the “Because Every Kid Needs a Hero” Essay Contest.
To kickoff this new outreach effort, Chief George Turner will make a special announcement Friday, March 4 at 11:30 a.m. at Public Safety Headquarters located at 226 Peachtree Street, SW, Atlanta, GA.
“Our youth are our most valuable asset and we want to let them know that we care,” said Chief George Turner. “We don’t want their first encounter with an officer to be in the back of a patrol car in handcuffs. We want to continue to build positive relationships with our youth and the citizens of Atlanta.”
The Because Every Kid Needs a Hero essay contest in the first of several community focused activities APD and DPR will partner on throughout this year.
“APD has had a long-standing relationship with Parks and Recreation for many years with its officers patrolling our parks and protecting our various Centers of Hope throughout the city,” said Commissioner Amy Phuong. “We believe exposure and positive interactions with the police early on are critical elements to helping youth establish trust and confidence in law enforcement.”
