City of Atlanta Reminds Drivers: Don’t Block the Box

Expanded list of intersections will be strictly monitored by the Atlanta Police Department during peak rush hours

ATLANTA – The City of Atlanta announced today that the Atlanta Police Department (APD) will step up enforcement in monitoring intersections and ticketing drivers who “block the box” at intersections throughout the city. Motorists block the box when they enter an intersection before traffic ahead has cleared and remain in the intersection after the light has turned red. Blocking the box increases traffic congestion and reduces public safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and emergency vehicles.

The City of Atlanta’s “Don’t Block the Box” campaign aims to educate commuters and promote the safety of drivers and pedestrians traveling within the city’s busy intersections. The intersections where the “don’t block the box” traffic rule will be strictly enforced include:

  • Central Avenue at Mitchell Street
  • Central Avenue at Trinity Avenue
  • Peachtree Street at Ellis Street
  • Peachtree Street at Andrew Young International Boulevard
  • Peachtree Street at John Portman Boulevard
  • Peachtree Street at Trinity Avenue
  • Peachtree Street at Mitchell Street
  • Peachtree Street at ML King Jr Drive
  • Peachtree Street at Marietta Street
  • Edgewood Avenue at Bell Street
  • Peachtree Street at Auburn Avenue
  • Peachtree Street at Baker Street
  • Peachtree Street at Ivan Allen Jr Blvd/Ralph McGill Boulevard
  • Peachtree Street at Linden Avenue
  • Peachtree St at North Avenue
  • 10th Street at Monroe Drive
  • 10th Street at Williams Street
  • 10th Street at Spring Street
  • 5th Street at Spring Street

These intersections will be clearly marked with new striping and signs instructing motorists not to block the box. Drivers can expect to see strict enforcement of the law citywide.

In the State of Georgia, blocking the box is illegal and could cost motorists up to $500 in fines, as well as pints on your driving record.
