Mayor Kasim Reed Orders Flags to Fly at Half-Staff at Atlanta City Hall to Honor Victims of Terror Attack in New York City

ATLANTA - “First and foremost, my prayers go out to the eight people whose lives were lost in a cowardly act of terror yesterday. Out of respect for the victims, I have ordered all flags on city property to be flown at half-staff, effective immediately. We join the families, friends and loved ones of the victims in mourning. We hold you in our hearts today.

I join Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill De Blasio in thanking the brave women and men of the NYPD, FDNY, as well as state and federal agencies who acted quickly to prevent further loss of life.

I have directed Chief Erika Shields and the Atlanta Police Department to heighten security measures at all public events and in our most visited public places over the next few days to ensure that Atlanta’s residents and visitors are safe, and are able to participate fully in our civic life.

Attacks of this nature are attempts to weaken our spirits and break the bonds we share. At moments like this, we must stand together and pledge that no terror attack will change the fundamentals of who we are as a city, state and nation.

My administration's number one priority remains the safety of all of Atlanta's residents and visitors and today I reaffirm my commitment to that effort."
