City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs Announces New Exhibition at Gallery 72

Steve Steinman presents Trash: The Art of Recycle, opens November 16, 2017 - January 11, 2018

ATLANTA – The City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs today announced a new exhibition of sculptural works by artist Steve Steinman at Gallery 72, the City’s art gallery in Downtown Atlanta. The exhibition, Trash: The Art of Recycle, runs from November 16, 2017 through January,11, 2018. The public is invited to attend an opening reception on Thursday, November 16, 2017 from 6 - 9 p.m. Steinman’s work is inspired by the process and philosophy of recycling.

“The natural world has inspired people since the beginning of time, primarily through its beauty and power. However, in the past one hundred years, man’s pursuit of manufacturing for mass consumerism has threatened the planet, with waste from disposable goods now a top environmental and political priority,” Steinman stated. “As a disposable society, it is easier to throw things out than to fix them. Recycling is a positive way to offset the damage. My work focuses on the art of reuse, renewal and recycling to reinforce this message.”

Steve Steinman is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and Pratt Institute, where he also taught before moving to Atlanta. He earned his doctorate from Capella University,  served as the Dean of the School of Design at the American InterContinental University in Atlanta, and retired after thirty-three years with the university.  Steinman has a prolific body of work on display around Atlanta; he designed and produced the art for the Buckhead MARTA station, the second largest station in the City of Atlanta.

Gallery 72 at 2 City Plaza is a municipal gallery operated by the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs dedicated to presenting stimulating and thought provoking contemporary art and programs that focus on advancing Atlanta’s arts offering.

The mission of the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs is to create and promote rich and diverse cultural experiences in the City of Atlanta that enhance quality of life and expand the city’s international reputation while preserving and protecting Atlanta’s cultural heritage.

Gallery 72 is located at 72 Marietta Street NW, Atlanta, and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.  The gallery is accessible by MARTA through the Five Points Station; paid parking is also available near the gallery.
