About DCP
The Department of City Planning is Committed to Atlanta
We are here to help make Atlanta the best city in America because we believe it can be. Our work focuses on exceptionally designed public spaces, strong neighborhood stewardship, effective zoning and codes, and a better customer experience through the framework of Atlanta City Design.
Its purpose—and our purpose—is to articulate a vision for Atlanta that residents can engage with, fall in love with, and use to make better decisions about the city’s future. Those decisions are then reflected in the plans, policies, and investments the City makes, allowing Dr. King’s concept of the Beloved Community to guide growth and transform Atlanta into the best possible version of itself.
Our Mission
The mission of the Department of City Planning is to enable high-quality, sustainable, and equitable growth and development in Atlanta by supporting more travel options, abundant housing for all people, thriving neighborhoods, exceptional design in architecture and public spaces, preservation of historic resources, innovative regulatory practices, safe and durable buildings, attentive customer service, and meaningful public engagement in all our work.
Atlanta City Design Values
Our Core Functions
Our Department guides Atlanta’s growth and development through effective, customer-focused urban design; plan review and permitting; code compliance; community and economic development; and policy related to housing and the environment.
We work closely with residents, the private sector, Neighborhood Planning Units (NPUs), and independent community organizations to advance the values of Atlanta City Design: Equity, Progress, Ambition, Access, and Nature.
