Natural Areas Division Overview:
Urban natural areas are essential for preserving and protecting Atlanta’s abundant tree canopy and wildlife habitat, while encouraging visitation for human respite and refuge. Access to nature provides a wide range of environmental, social, and health benefits, enhancing the quality of life for all Atlantans.
Natural Area A natural area is where plant growth is unrestricted except to improve the diversity and function of an ecosystem. They are at least 1 acre in size and are often dominated by native vegetation. Natural areas managed by the Department of Parks and Recreation are assigned to the Office of Natural Resources for management. Natural areas include nature preserves and undeveloped portions of parks.
The Natural Areas Division is responsible for:
• Invasive Species Management
• Ecosystem Restoration
• Improving Public Access to Natural Areas
• Natural Area Assessments and Land Use Determination
• Silvicultural Prescription Review
• Forest Preservation and Acquisition
