The Restoration Memorial & Preserve is currently in the planning phase. Following the completion of planning and design efforts, scheduled to conclude in summer 2026, DPR will use the master plan and accompanying report with recommendations to determine the next steps for the site. The City of Atlanta owns the Restoration Memorial & Preserve site.

Initial fieldwork was completed in Fall of 2025, and reports will be published during the course of the project. Ongoing historic research and oral history interviews will continue throughout the public engagement period. For more information, please visit our Resources page.

How can I provide feedback on the proposed planning and design? There are several community engagement events planned for 2026 where you can learn about project updates and share your feedback directly with DPR and the consultant team for the Restoration Memorial & Preserve site. Please see the Community Meeting Schedule section of the Events – News – Project Updates Page. You can also visit the Survey page and sign up for the project mailing list in the Get Involved section at the bottom of the page. 

If you or someone you know has a special connection to the former Atlanta Prison Farm or the site, we would love to hear your story. Please share your contact information in the Get Involved section and include a message indicating that you would like to share your experience. A member of the project team will be in touch. 

Will the project name change once the planning and design process is complete? As part of the planning and design process, we expect to hear many suggestions for the Future Green Space name. We will collect those.

The public is invited to participate in four in-person meetings throughout the winter and spring of 2026. These meetings will be held at four different City of Atlanta DPR recreation centers near the project site. These meetings will introduce the community to the project, and solicit feedback on specific topics that change with each meeting. Community members are invited to attend any and all of these four meetings regardless of the rotating location. Alongside the in person meetings, digital outreach will consist of regular website postings of meeting materials and fieldwork reports. A digital survey will be open during the engagement as well.  

 Who else is involved in the project? The City of Atlanta Department of Parks & Recreation is leading the current effort, in conjunction with HGOR (an Atlanta-based design studio) and its multidisciplinary team of archaeologists, historians, ecologists, arborists, architects, and engineers, to study the site.

The Department of Parks & Recreation has initiated the Restoration Memorial & Preserve process to build on the Parks and Greenspace Vision Statement, Guiding Principles, Recommendations, and Goal Statements of Subgroup 2 of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center Task Force, and to develop a master plan and a report with recommendations that will guide DPR’s next steps towards opening the site for public use for the site with community input. 

DPR initiated this effort to obtain professional recommendations and community input on potential future uses of the site, which will inform future programming. DPR has teamed with HGOR (an Atlanta-based design studio) and their multidisciplinary team of archaeologists, historians, ecologists, arborists, architects, and engineers to study the site. Through a series of engagement activities, this team will share their findings with the community for discussion and incorporate that feedback into the final master plan report. The report’s recommendations will guide DPR’s next steps towards opening the site for public use.
