The Office of Transportation issues parking permits and provides assistance to parking permit applicants and holders. The City of Atlanta seeks to ensure adequate on-street parking for our residents and visitors. Motor vehicles bearing a special parking permit may be parked in excess of the time limits posted on streets within certain areas known as residential permit parking areas. (Ord. No. 2002-56, § 1, Sec 150-159, 150-170).

Residential Parking Permit - General Information

Applications can be submitted via e-mail, mail or in person.  Processing fees are accepted with a check or money order made out to the City of Atlanta. Electronic payment methods are not available. Please do not submit credit card payments via email.  To reduce wait time when obtaining a permit, download and complete the application prior to your arrival. Bring photocopies of original documents that we may keep on file with your application (copies of current driver's license, proof of residency, vehicle registration).

Residential Parking Permit - General Information

  • Required Documents Include:
    • Current Driver's License for the driver of the permitted vehicle
    • Proof of Residency (utility bill, signed lease contract, etc). Lease contracts must be signed by the landlord and the lessee/tenant. Lease term must be active at the time of application submission
    • Current vehicle registration must accompany all applications for residential parking permits

  • The address provided on the application must be an address within a Residential Parking Permit area.

  • Full-term permits are valid for one year and must be renewed annually.

  • A permit shall be issued only to a motor vehicle owner or operator who resides on property that is either fronting or is located on a corner lot along a block face or has vehicular access from an included block face located within the residential permit parking area. Upon application and payment of the applicable fee, residential parking permits shall be issued in accordance with the following limitations:

    a. For single-family dwelling units (one residential structure containing only one housing unit), two residential parking permits may be issued for each valid street address.

    b. For multiple family dwelling units (including but not limited to, apartments, condominiums, attached dwellings, rowhouses and townhouses):

    1) Two residential parking permits may be issued for each legally constituted and existing dwelling unit in any two-family or multiple-family dwelling facility at a valid street address within the residential permit parking area where said dwelling unit has no off-street parking availability.

    2) One residential parking permit may be issued for each legally constituted and existing dwelling unit in any two-family or multiple-family dwelling facility at a valid street address within the residential permit parking area where said dwelling unit does have off-street parking availability

  • An annual Residential Parking Permit may be purchased for $20.00 per permit.

  • Permits can be applied for in person, by mail or by e-mail
    • To obtain a permit in person, visit City of Atlanta, Office of Transportation, 55 Trinity Avenue SW, Suite 4900, Atlanta, GA 30303.
    • To apply for a permit by mail, send all required materials to City of Atlanta, Office of Transportation, 55 Trinity Avenue SW, Suite 4900, Atlanta, GA 30303 with the Attention to: Residential Permit Parking.
    • To apply for a permit by email, include all electronic copies of supporting documentation with a completed application and send the required materials to DPW-Permits@atlantaga.gov.

  • Upon receipt of a completed application, we will process and mail the requested permits back to you.

  • Please report lost, stolen, or damaged permits by emailing your name, address, permit number, parking area and a copy of your invoice to DPW-Permits@atlantaga.gov. 
  • Replacement of a lost, stolen or damaged permit can be purchased for $20.00.
  • Methods of payments accepted include personal checks, money order and credit cards. Do not mail in cash.
    • All applicants that are using a credit card must visit City Hall at 55 Trinity Avenue Suite 4900, Atlanta, GA 30303 to complete the payment process.
  • Furnishing false information to obtain a Residential parking Permit or using use permit in a fraudulent or unlawful manner is punishable by a $1,000.00 fine or 60 days in jail.

Instructions for Permit Use - Where should I place the decal?

  • The decal should be permanently attached to the inside lower left corner of the rear window, driver's side. When using with tinted windows place a white paper in background before placing the decal or place decal on the driver side window.

  • All vehicle changes/modifications should be reported as soon as possible, and replacement decals will require a $20.00 replacement fee. Changes and replacement requests may be submitted in person, US mail or emailed to DPW-Permits@atlantaga.gov.

  • Passes may not be transferred without notifying our office.
    • Upon notification to the Office of Transportation, Residential Permits may be transferred to newly purchase vehicles. Please notify the Office of Transportation via e-mail and include permit decal, new vehicle registration and new license plate number.

Guest Passes

  • To obtain a guest pass, complete the Guest Pass Request Form 

  • Instructions for the use of Guest Passes

    • Guest passes are required for non-permit holders and should be displayed on the inside of the vehicle, on the driver's side of the dashboard.
      • Each date should be entered sequentially
      • Multiple days can be listed in advance by day
      • Date ranges are not allowed

  • Two Guest Passes will be given upon your purchase of a residential permit.

  • Guest Passes cannot be provided by e-mail.

  • Medical service providers may obtain an annual guest pass with documentation that they will be providing healthcare at a residency in a restricted residential permit parking area.

  • The use of Guest Passes in Residential Permit Parking areas is strictly enforced. Relaxed enforcement during special events or large gatherings is prohibited.

Inappropriate uses of Residential Permits

  • A Residential Parking Permit shall only be displayed on the vehicle described on the permit application.

  • A Residential Parking Permit does not authorize parking or standing a vehicle in an area where parking is prohibited.

  • A vehicle bearing a decal that is not visible for enforcement will be subject to a citation.

  • Furnishing false information to obtain a Residential parking Permit or using use permit in a fraudulent or unlawful manner is punishable by a $1,000.00 fine or 60 days in jail.
