Boil Water Advisory Lifted

As of 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2026, the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management (DWM) has lifted the Boil Water Advisory issued on Friday, May 22, 2026, for customers in the Atlanta downtown corridor.

Water Quality Update

Sampling results have confirmed that no contamination was detected in the public water system. Water may now be used for all purposes without boiling.

The City’s drinking water meets or exceeds standards established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as required by the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division has also been notified.

Boil Water Advisory

Due to an internal power failure at the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant, the facility experienced a temporary loss of electrical service, resulting in low water pressure in impacted areas. Power has since been restored.

As a precaution and in accordance with public health guidance, a Boil Water Advisory remains in effect for impacted areas in the downtown corridor. Approximately 50,000 customers are within the impacted advisory area.

What Residents Should Do

Customers in impacted areas should boil all water used for:

  • Drinking
  • Cooking
  • Brushing teeth
  • Making ice
  • Food preparation

Water should be boiled for at least one minute past a rolling boil.

Current Status

Water service has been restored in impacted areas, and DWM crews continue monitoring system operations and conducting water quality testing.

The advisory will remain in effect pending required testing and regulatory clearance confirming the water is safe for normal use.

Boil Water Advisory

The City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management (DWM) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Atlanta, specifically in the downtown corridor, due to an internal power failure at the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant. Power has been restored at the pump station.

This boil water advisory is being issued out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with Georgia EPD guidance for public notice. Please see maps for impacted areas.

What You Should Do

Residents and businesses who experienced low water pressure or water outages should:

  • Boil water for one minute past a rolling boil before:
    • Drinking
    • Cooking
    • Preparing baby food
    • Brushing teeth
  • Or use bottled water instead.

Do not drink from public water fountains in impacted areas.

Advisory Status

The advisory will remain in place until required water quality testing is completed and DWM is cleared to lift the advisory.
