A Domestic Partnership is a personal relationship between two people who have committed to living together and remaining partners throughout their lives

The City of Atlanta issues Certificates of Domestic Partnership to same-gender and opposite-gender couples who meet all of the criteria set out in Atlanta’s Code of Ordinances, Domestic Partnerships. The Certificate evidences Atlanta’s official, governmental recognition of the relationship as one that meets the uniquely significant qualities of a Domestic Partnership.

Atlanta’s Certification is available to all couples residing in the City of Atlanta and to City employees. Though not equivalent to marriage, the Certification is accepted by many private employers and service providers to qualify same-sex couples for benefits that are otherwise reserved for legally-married couples. City of Atlanta employees may extend their health insurance and pension benefits to their certified Domestic Partners.

Domestic Partnership Certificates are issued at City Hall by appointmentCouples must complete a Declaration of Domestic Partnership which will be provided at the appointment. Each individual must bring acceptable identification verifying joint residency (acceptable identification includes a passport, Georgia Driver’s License, Georgia voter registration card or other state-issued identification, or a utility bill containing the names of both partners). Individuals must be at least 18 years old, must not have another domestic partner, and must not be legally married or legally separated. If either party has previously entered into a domestic partnership, that partnership must be terminated.  If not, then it must be terminated, and the parties will have a waiting period of six (6) months before they can enter into another partnership.

A processing fee of $30 will be charged.
