City of Atlanta Winter Weather Update: Thursday, January 23, 2025, 5:30 PM 

The City of Atlanta will open warming centers ahead of colder temperatures.

 The warming centers will open:

 

  • Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. – Friday, January 24 at 11:00 a.m.
  • Friday, January 24 at 8:00 p.m. - Saturday, January 25 at 11:00 a.m.
  • Saturday, January 25 at 8:00 p.m. - Sunday, January 26 at 10:00 a.m.

 

The first warming center will open at Central Park Recreation Center at 400 Merritts Ave. NE, Atlanta 30308.

 

The second warming center will open at Selena S. Butler Park at 98 WM Holmes Borders Dr SE, Atlanta, GA 30312 for women and children only.

 

(Old Adamsville Recreation Center at 3404 Delmar Ln NW, Atlanta, GA 30331 will continue to serve as an overflow location.)

 

Transportation will be provided nightly 8:00 p.m. from the Gateway Center with return transportation provided by Fulton County from the Gateway Center upon deactivation.

 

Activation times are subject to change based on the updated National Weather Service forecast.

The City of Atlanta continues to closely monitor the ongoing winter weather conditions and remains committed to ensuring the safety of its residents.

 

Your safety is our priority - please avoid driving and allow crews to treat the roads. Please stay inside and use extra caution if you must travel. Due to the freezing temperatures, some backroads are not clear.

 

Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT)

  • ATLDOT pretreated with brine before the artic blast on Sunday on all priority roads to help mitigate the impact of winter conditions.
  • Crews have been actively treating roads with salt since Tuesday. 
  • The department advises residents to stay off the roads if possible to prevent accidents, while ATLDOT facilitates ongoing snow removal and icy treatment efforts.

 

 

 

Precautionary Measures:

  • Do not travel unless absolutely necessary.
  • If you must travel, exercise extreme caution.
  • For the latest road conditions, call 511.

Warming centers are open through Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 1:00 p.m.

City of Atlanta Offices and Facility Opening

All City of Atlanta government offices will have a delayed start time of 10:00 AM on tomorrow Thursday, January 23, 2025.

 

Department of Public Works (DPW) Updates

  • Garbage (no recycling) and bulk collections resume Thursday January 23, 2025.
  • There will be service delays throughout the week.
  • Garbage carts should be placed curbside until collected. Garbage collections will occur through Saturday.
  • The regular collection schedule resumes Monday, January 27.

 City of Atlanta to Keep Warming Centers Open Ahead of Cold Weather

  • The centers will reopen on Thursday, January 23, at 8 PM to continue assisting those in need.

  • DWM is actively monitoring roadway conditions in collaboration with the Atlanta Department of Transportation to identify and clear critical roadways. This ensures crews can access hazardous sites and carry out necessary repairs.
  • DWM crews may experience delays in reaching certain locations that are currently difficult to access; however, work is ongoing.
  • DWM has not implemented any service interruptions within its service area.

Out of an abundance of caution, City of Atlanta offices will remain closed on Wednesday, January 22, with employees working virtually. Please stay inside and use extra caution if you must travel. Due to the freezing temperatures, some backroads are not possible.

  • Due to weather conditions, DPW is suspending all garbage, recycling, yard debris, and bulk collections on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

The City of Atlanta is actively preparing for the anticipated winter weather and is taking measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents. To prioritize public safety, all City of Atlanta government offices, including Municipal Courts, will be closed with employees working virtually on TuesdayJanuary 21, 2025.

Atlanta Department of Transportation 

ATLDOT has pretreated all priority roads and advises to stay off the roads if possible. 

Parks and Recreation 

All city-sanctioned events and Department of Parks and Recreation after school programs will also be canceled.

Warming centers will be open continuously from Sunday, January 19, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. through Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at 3:00 p.m.
